Mark Hernandez

Two Hands of Many

Mark Hernandez is a nonprofit professional with more than 25 years of experience as an administrator, fundraiser, community organizer, performer/creative, teaching artist, and philanthropy advisor. In 2019, he was appointed the first full-time Development Director of the Alliance for California Traditional Arts.

Mark got his start in the Development Department of San Francisco Opera in the 1990s, holding positions of increasing responsibility. From 2000 through 2014, he was a busy freelance, completing short- and long-term assignments for performing arts providers, academic institutions, service organizations, and museums. He returned to full-time work in 2015.

In 1998, Mark came to the attention of the grantmaker community. Since then, he has been routinely engaged by public and private entities to provide subjective appraisals and objective analyses, opinions on field issues, and funding recommendations. For 15 years, he has served as philanthropy advisor to a major family foundation.

While Mark has extensive experience with the performing arts, he has always been dedicated to issues of justice, as evidenced by his community work with Success Centers/Each One Reach One, California Arts Council, and San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocates. Furthermore, he is endlessly curious about what others are doing to improve the quality of life in his beloved California.

Mark possesses hard-to-find abilities that make him a particularly valuable asset. His writing credits include two published books and an opera libretto. A keen student of human nature, he can forge and sustain mutually satisfying relationships with all kinds of people. His background in the professional theater has made him a gifted public speaker. Highly regarded for his strategic vision, he can evaluate virtually any situation in a way that is productive and often revelatory.

All told, Mark offers meaningful experience, a rare combination of hard and soft skills, proficiency as a one-person department or team player, and a verifiable record of accomplishment. He is privileged to put his professional life at the service of projects and organizations dedicated to individual and collective wellbeing.
